Manuscript guidelines
These notes help authors prepare a manuscript that is ready for assessment.
Submission
Send your manuscript to the editor by email, and follow it with a printed copy by post. The electronic and printed versions must match exactly. Both should follow the guidance on this page.
Language and length
Manuscripts are published in English. Write in clear, formal prose and keep the paper as long as the material requires. A focused paper of moderate length is generally preferred to a long one that repeats itself.
Structure
- A title that states the subject plainly.
- An abstract summarising the aim, method and findings.
- Keywords for indexing.
- A main body with numbered sections and a clear line of argument.
- Conclusions that follow from the evidence presented.
- References in a consistent style throughout.
Tables and figures
Number tables and figures in the order in which they are mentioned. Each should carry a short caption and be understandable on its own. Supply figures in a form that can be reproduced clearly in print.
References
Cite every source you rely on and give full details for each. Follow one referencing style consistently and make sure that every entry in the list is cited in the text.
Review
Papers are read by the managing editor and sent for independent assessment. Authors are told the outcome and, where a paper is accepted, any revisions requested before publication.
